Cloud or on-premises? Why the right answer is often hybrid
By Herbert Röblreiter

“Cloud or our own server?” is rarely the best starting question. Applications, data flows, resilience, costs and freedom of choice matter more. For many businesses, these requirements lead to a carefully designed hybrid environment.
Architecture follows the way you work
An accounting or production application may be best kept locally, while email, calendars and secure collaboration can benefit from a cloud service. Other businesses deliberately choose a fully local or dedicated environment. Either approach can be appropriate when it fits operations, protection requirements and responsibilities.
What hybrid means in practice
A hybrid environment connects components with clearly defined roles. Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace might handle collaboration, while Proxmox runs internal applications and data locally. Nextcloud or similar platforms can be used where keeping control of data and file sharing is important.
- Identities, permissions and devices are planned consistently.
- Data flows, backup and recovery are considered across platforms.
- The costs of external services and dependencies on them remain transparent.
Design around the business
Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 are powerful tools, as are Google Workspace, open-source solutions, your own servers and dedicated systems. A sound decision follows the needs of the business.
DAXS therefore starts by assessing applications, data, sites, users, interfaces and the desired operating model. This produces clear options, from a fully cloud-based environment to a controlled on-premises or hybrid setup.
The next practical step
A good target architecture can be built gradually. A sound backup plan, clearer identities or the phased replacement of individual components often delivers more value than a complete migration in one go. Further information about operating models and data control is available in the DAXS documentation.
